RiverFirst Interim Land Use Strategy Presentation

August 2, 2017 by Janette Law

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is actively assembling Upper Riverfront properties that will, in time, become part of the RiverFirst network of parks and trails. Until then, this patchwork of properties may have continuing commercial uses or are otherwise not ready for park development.

That’s where, in 2015-2016, our Research Assistants in Practice (RA) program came in. Under the supervision of Minneapolis Parks Fellow Bruce Chamberlain, the team of Han Do, Chris Tallman, and Leslie Johnson undertook research and design for an Interim Land Management Strategy for stewarding the properties until they are ready for park development.

The Parks Foundation RAs developed a policy framework and conceptual approaches to managing properties that celebrate them as meaningful public spaces with minimal capital investment. Take a look at their work, below, and stay tuned for more on the topic from our 2017 RA, Jake Halsne.

Great real-world experience for these RAs. Kudos to Parks Foundation for providing this opportunity.
