5 Films (and 1 TV Show) Shot in Minneapolis Parks

This month we tapped our friend, Stephanie Curtis, co-host of Minnesota Public Radio’s the Cube Critics to share a few movies filmed in Minneapolis parks. To our surprise, there are quite a few flicks which includes scenes shot in our city’s green jewels! This list is by no means exhaustible but here are a few examples.

A romantic comedy following a newly separated fella who puts a personal ad out in the local newspaper.

Mighty Ducks, 1992
Location: Peavey Park
Actors: Emilio Estevez, Joss Ackland, Lane Smith, Josef Sommer, and Joshua Jackson

This was a 90’s childhood hit, especially among pee-wee hockey players. There is a memorable scene of Gardon (Emilio Estevez) meeting the team in Pavey Park with the Minneapolis downtown skyline in the background.

Twenty Bucks, 1993
Location: St. Anthony Falls, over the 3rd Avenue Bridge
Actors: Linda Hunt, Brendan Fraser, Gladys Knight, Elizabeth Shue and Steve Buscemi

A homeless woman finds $20 bill that floated away from the ATM machine, before the owner could catch it. The film follows the $20 as it journeys into funny human situations. There is a scene of the bill seen floating above St. Anthony Falls.

Joe Somebody, 2001
Location: Stone Arch Bridge
Actors: Tim Allen, Julie Bowen, Kelly Lynch, Greg Germann, and Hayden Panettiere

Joe Scheffer (Tim Allen), is forced into a bit of a workplace bully predicament. This comedy-drama has a scene of the Stone Arch Bridge, where Joe drives car on it.

Stuck Between Stations, 2011
Location: Greenway, Loring Park 
Actors: Sam Rosen, Zoe Lister Jones, Josh Hartnett, Michael Imperioli, and Nadia Dajani

The film is a coming-of-age story in which a couple of former high school friends are reunited by chance at party. A Greenway scene makes an appearance as the friends catch up, into the evening.

Mary Tyler Moore Show, 1970
Location: Lake of the Isles
Actors: Mary Tyler Moore, Edward Asner, Valerie Harper, Gavin MacLeod, Ted Knight, Cloris Leachman, Georgia Engel, and Betty White

Not a film but a television show, we mustn’t forget about that famous opening credit scene of Mary Tyler Moore walking under the bridge in Lake of the Isles.
