It’s hard to believe, but by the time you’re reading this I’ll have been the Executive Director of the Minneapolis Parks Foundation for one month. I’m honored to be in this role, and my first weeks have been both full and exciting. From celebrating a successful Sunrise on the Mississippi to presenting a $3.5 million check – the first of three transfers to the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board for Transforming North Commons – it’s been an amazing start.
Amid these milestones, the most meaningful part has been getting to know the people connected to the Parks Foundation and our incredible park system. I’ve loved meeting supporters – some who have been with us since the very beginning – and hearing why Minneapolis parks matter to them. These conversations remind me how parks connect us to one another while also offering space for health, wellbeing, and joy.
October will be another busy month. I’m especially looking forward to our annual Posters for Parks event on Oct. 11, a wonderful way to support both the parks we love and the local artists who share that passion.
Later in the month on Oct. 29, the League of Women Voters Minneapolis is hosting a nonpartisan candidate forum for Park Board commissioners and we’re encouraging people to attend. Our park system is uniquely led by elected commissioners, this forum is an important opportunity to hear directly from candidates and make informed decisions ahead of Election Day on Nov. 4.
Both events are reminders that there are many ways to support the Minneapolis park system beyond making a donation. Whether through art, civic engagement, or showing up at community events, you’re helping to build an active, engaged community of park lovers.
