Our SiteSeeing class with Webber Park Rec+ went “Walk-About” last Wednesday. With permission, of course!
Through this very special field trip, kids learn both technical and conceptual design skills. Kids begin to see the city differently by choosing physical features to photograph, identifying them on a map, and learning how they connect with each other to define the neighborhood’s “identity.”
And, it’s a lot of fun. Spencer Bauer, co-instructor of the Webber Park class, shared these photos and stories.
Casey is taking some pictures of a large hill overlooking a park by an abandoned elementary school (Shingle Creek).
Lucas looks over an aerial map and points out places we went or he has gone.
Reading the maps was a struggle at first, but once the kids figured it out it was great to see them being able to locate places they frequent or routes they take throughout the neighborhood.

Popular areas seemed to be park areas, Shingle Creek, and big shady trees – it was a hot day 🙂 . Urban design things they learned about included wayfinding signage, storm water drainage, and erosion.
