May 3, 2012 (MINNEAPOLIS) – Arborists from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) are teaming up with community and local business volunteers to celebrate Arbor Week by planting more than 1,000 boulevard trees in the tornado-hit areas of North Minneapolis. The event is part of the Park Board’s initiative to plant 3,100 trees in April and May.

The week-long Arbor Week Northside Treecovery event will take place from May 15-19. During the week, 400 plus volunteers from Cargill, Best Buy, Target and Xcel Energy will assist with the planting of more than 1,000 boulevard trees in the Willard Hay, Jordan and Folwell neighborhoods of North Minneapolis.

The Arbor Week event will wrap up with a community tree planting event on Saturday, May 19 in partnership with the Camden Lions, the Lions Club International and Minneapolis Parks Foundation.

“Arbor Week is a great opportunity for local businesses and community members to come together around the shared vision of reforesting the northside,” said Second District Commissioner Jon Olson. “The Park Board’s initiative was to replace 3,100 trees by spring 2012, and thanks to the overwhelming response by community volunteers and the support of our corporate sponsors, we will achieve that goal.”

Corporate partners are Best Buy, Cargill, Target and Xcel Energy, Arbor Week’s premier sponsors are Camden Lions, the Lions Club International and Minneapolis Parks Foundation. For a full schedule of events, visit www.minneapolisparks.org.

The Minneapolis Parks Foundation is raising funding for 400 trees to help the Northside “treecover.” The tax-deductible cost of planting one tree is only $120, and returns a lifetime of individual and community benefits. Visit www.MplsParksFoundation.org/Treecovery to learn more and donate any amount to the Northside “re-leaf” effort.

There are still opportunities available to volunteer for the May 19 community event. For full details, visit www.minneapolisparks.org/register and search for activity codes 16612 and 16613.
