Nicollet Mall joins the riverfront as urban design project

Congratulations to James Corner Field Operations on its selection for a “Nicollet Mall redo.” The New York-based urban design firm, famous for its work on the High Line, was chosen for its zoned approach to bringing more and more varied activity to “Minnesota’s Main Street.”

Nicollet Mall designer selection was modeled after the 2010-11 Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition, which yielded RiverFirst. In an MPR interview, Minneapolis Parks Foundation Board Member Tom Fisher – Dean of the University of Minnesota College of Design – welcomed the new addition to urban design efforts in Minneapolis. You can listen to his comments, and those of James Corner himself, here.

Take a look at JCFO’s finalist presentation, as well as those from additional finalists Daoust Lestage and Tom Leader Studio/!Melk. What do you think of their ideas?
