Designed to give young people space to create freely and build skills in a supportive environment, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s Spark’d Studios brings creative arts programming and innovative technology into five Minneapolis park recreation centers across the city. Through hands-on opportunities in photography, design, music, journalism, visual art, entrepreneurship, and more, the studios encourage youth to explore new interests and experiment creatively.
For 16-year-old Sincere Kanan Smith, Spark’d Studios became a place to discover photography, build confidence, and work toward future goals. We sat down with Sincere to learn more about his experience with Spark’d Studios and connection to Minneapolis parks. From capturing meaningful moments at Farview Park to planning for his own photography business, Sincere’s story reflects the power of creative community spaces to provide mentorship and opportunity.
How long have you been attending Spark’d Studios, and what kinds of things have you tried or discovered there?
“I started going to Spark’d Studios around late June or July in 2025. The first thing I tried was photo editing and learning how to use Photoshop. I learned how to use the different tools to change backgrounds and make it look like you’re somewhere else. Then I started learning photography, which I hadn’t really explored before. I became really interested in that, and learning how to take a good photo.”

How has being part of Spark’d Studios helped you grow, make friends, or see new possibilities for yourself?
“At first, I didn’t even know photography was something I could do. They showed me how to take photos and how to use space to create a good image. I wasn’t that good at first, but I just kept doing it, and over time, I got better. It helped me see that I could improve if I stayed patient and kept practicing. It also showed me that I could turn something creative into a job. I started to see new possibilities for myself, and now I’m in the process of getting my own camera and developing a photography business, with the help of some Spark’d Studios mentors. So it’s given me resources, a sense of possibility, and has helped me think about the future differently.”
Spark’d Studios held a student showcase last year, which is where some Parks Foundation staff saw your photography, particularly your photos of Farview Park in Minneapolis. Can you give me an overview of what interested you about photography and what led you to taking photos of this park?
“What got me into photography was just learning about it through Spark’d, and the initial interest I had. When I realized I was good, and was getting better the more I practiced, it just stuck. I chose Farview Park because of the scenery and my personal connection to it. I used to go there a lot when I was younger. I liked capturing different details of the park. I would go there a lot, outside of program hours, just to get the shots I wanted. It took a lot of patience. I would take a lot of photos of the same spot, sometimes like 10–14 pictures, just to get the perfect shot. I was very dedicated to the process and it was cool to see how everything turned out.”

What are some other things you’re passionate about or enjoy doing at the moment?
“I like playing basketball a lot. I just played on my high school team this past season. I usually play shooting guard or small forward. I also enjoy cooking and learning new recipes; I think my favorite thing to make has been Chicken Alfredo. I’m also interested in current events, especially from a justice perspective. I think it’s important to talk about things like politics and what’s going on in the world with the people in your life.”
What are some of your favorite places in Minneapolis and what do you think makes a place special?
“I like downtown Minneapolis a lot. I like the food there and how there are a lot of different options. I also really like the skyline, especially when you’re in a car and you can see all the buildings, it’s beautiful. It’s also a great place for photography because there are a lot of good backgrounds and scenic spots. I think what makes a place special is the scenery, and the memories you have there.”
What role do you think parks and community spaces have played in connecting you to opportunities and/or important people in your life?
“Parks have connected me to a sense of possibility and learning new things. Through Spark’d Studios, I got really into photography, which was something new for me, and I met people who wanted to help me grow and support what I’m interested in. I’m also part of the Parks’ Teen Teamworks program, and this summer I’ll be working at Powderhorn Park. That experience has shown me I can work in creative and meaningful ways, while also learning more about how parks operate and support the community. These places have connected me to creativity, mentorship, work opportunities, and even ways I can help support my family and future goals.”
Do you have any advice for other young people who might be looking to explore something creative?
“When you are trying something for the first time, don’t forget to have fun with it. Just because something is new or different doesn’t mean you should quit. It might feel uncomfortable at first, and you might need to practice a lot, but that’s part of the process. Be patient with yourself and keep going!”
What are some things you’re looking forward to this summer?
“I’m looking forward to my junior year of high school and getting my drivers license! I’m hoping I can get my own camera soon, so I can take more photos and start my own photography business. In general, I’m just looking forward to the summer, staying active, and continuing to improve at the things I enjoy.”
