Our Summer Events Will Create Connections

This month we are launching the second season of our Minneapolis Parks Walk & Talks – a series of curated strolls through different parks in Minneapolis with people who know about the intersection of stories, nature, and public space. Over the summer, we are offering several unique walks as a way to build stronger ties to the parks that shape our city, including a RiverFirst riverfront tour (June); art and urban design in Lorning Park and the Sculpture Garden (July); and a special opportunity to understand the stories from indigenous people while walking around Bde Maka Ska.

Walking (or if assistance is helpful, wheeling) is a simple yet profound way to connect to the land around us and each other. There is unfolding science showing that a stroll in nature can calm the mind and settle the nerves, in addition to other tangible physical benefits. Our most recent Next Generation of Parks speaker, pediatrician Dr. Robert Zarr, has even incorporated prescribing activity in parks as a way to improve his patient’s health outcomes.

No matter how you come to the parks, the power of taking time to move through them thoughtfully is rewarding on many levels. The conversations and perspectives shared with others while in a natural environment can open new connections and forge new relationships.

The Minneapolis Parks Foundation is a catalyst for change in our parks by helping create new parks and trails for all while generating events and activities that strengthen our connections to the people and places that make Minneapolis a natural home to many.

With the summer fast approaching, please look through our upcoming Walk & Talks and other events and consider coming out to enjoy the amazing parks of Minneapolis and the myriad ways people enjoy them.

In addition to our monthly Walk & Talks, Get Outdoors Day on Friday, June 7, at Powderhorn Park is yet another family-friendly and fun way to connect with our parks and sample a variety of outdoor activities including biking, paddling, fishing and archery. Co-hosted in partnership with other outdoor agencies including the Minnesota DNR and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Get Outdoors Day is increasing in popularity each year.

However you choose to enjoy the parks, we know you’ll benefit from the time you spend outside. Come join us – I look forward to seeing you.
