A timely article in the New York Times about the unequal distribution of philanthropy with respect to parks.

In her February 17 story, reporter Lisa Foderaro notes that in New York parks are now viewed “on par with hospitals, libraries and cultural institutions as object of philanthropy.” Certain New York parks – because of their status as high-profile signature projects or location in affluent neighborhoods – receive sizable gifts; other parks not so fortunately located, for example, aren’t receiving the same private support.

The challenge is how to address the emerging inequality (in terms of funding, maintenance and operations) throughout parks systems in a time when public budgets are being cut.
